“Waste not, want not”, a proverb which essentially means, if you use something wisely and without extravagance, you will never be in need.
Our awareness for using products and material wisely to create a more sustainable planet is ever increasing, especially within the fashion industry. With up to 95% of the textiles being sent to land fill each year, the time to act upon recycling is now!
Living a more sustainable lifestyle is on everyone’s radar at the moment, whether it be reducing your plastic use, or upping your recycling efforts.
In fashion, brands are beginning to produce more consciously, choosing to work with organic fibres and encouraging a more responsible supply chain, but the battle brands can’t fight alone comes much later down the line.
According to WRAP UK, the value of unused clothing in wardrobes is estimated at around £30 billion, with £140 million worth ending up in landfill each year.
We are all guilty of it in one form or another;
- Impulse purchases that maybe you didn’t need, left to sit in the back of the wardrobe waiting for an appropriate occasion (that never comes!)
- That purchase that, in hindsight, just wasn’t your style or the right fit which was too late to return,
- Maybe you bust the knee out of your favourite jeans and wanted a new pair,
Regardless of the reason its all waste, whether its sat in your wardrobe collecting dust, or a part of the masses of clothing that ends up in landfill.
Here at Monkee Genes we want to help play a part in tackling the issues of waste in fashion. Using our ‘Journal’ on the website we will be talking about the ways in which you can help fight fashion waste. We will be collaborating with influencers and experts over the next few months to help you make informed decisions about your wardrobe and encourage our customers to reduce their own waste and make your wardrobe your own!
